k8s: Kubernetes v1.36: Advancing Workload-Aware Scheduling

Kubernetes v1.36 introduces a redesigned workload-aware scheduling model with separate Workload and PodGroup APIs, a dedicated PodGroup scheduling cycle for gang scheduling, topology-aware placement, workload-aware preemption, DRA ResourceClaim support for PodGroups, and initial Job controller integration. All of these features are alpha and require specific feature gates; the Job integration currently applies only to fixed-size, Indexed Jobs.

Kubernetes v1.36 adds multiple DRA graduations and new alpha features, including support for ResourceClaims in PodGroups, node allocatable resources, and device metadata discovery in containers. It also improves scheduling, health reporting, and resource visibility, while continuing the migration path from device plugins to DRA.

Kubernetes v1.36 is planned for April 22, 2026 and includes API deprecations/removals plus several feature graduations. Notable changes are deprecating Service .spec.externalIPs, disabling the gitRepo volume driver, and promoting SELinux volume labeling and external ServiceAccount token signing to GA.
